Hello friends, welcome back to the blog! I hope you are all safe, sound and healthy as you are reading this. In the midst of nothing but stress, anxiety and shaken faith, I am finding solace in cultivating my space. When moving into my new apartment last summer, I made a commitment to myself to only buy items that make me happy. Items that I truly want in my space and I could see having long-term.
In my last apartment, I spent so much time rushing to get it “done” that I didn’t really love anything. I made the rookie mistake of buying fast and cheap. And since I started working from home 3/4 of the time during the last 2 years living there, I started to hate everything then went through the same cycle of buying cheap and fast to make it “better”. When I moved out, I made that promise to myself to only buy what I would want to look at every day.
Fast forward to know and I’m so proud (and completely blesses) to say that I absolutely love my new bedding space! I call this a bedding space instead of a true bedroom because in my studio apartment, there is no wall to separate where I sleep (bedding space), eat (kitchen & island), relax (living space with couch & tv) and work (newly refreshed office space). The only closed off spaces are the walk-in-closet (praise hands) & the bathroom.
If you saw my last apartment update a few weeks ago, I’m sure you can see the major changes that happened between then and now. That same week of taking those pictures, I decided to change the bedding, get side tables and overall brighten up the space. My first stop, of course, was Target. I shared this same comforter about 4 times on IG stories for several weeks while debating back and fourth if I should get it. The weekend I went to pick it up, the comforter was on sale online, which they price matched, and then had a 20% coupon on the Target Circle app. I ended up paying about $50 instead of $80. While there, I picked up these large dark yellow pillows, along with this off white oblong pillow. I wanted to change my regular pillow cases so I also snagged these off white, almost heather white, pillow cases. All of which were on sale and cost me about 30% less than I would have paid the next day.
I have a mini obsession with throw pillows and found the small blue and white stripe pillows months ago at Belk. I picked up the silk pillowcases from a hair store. All my black and brown girls know that the hair store is seriously the hidden gem for tons of trends on the low.
If you saw when I picked up these side tables from Ross, I was looking for suggestions on how paint them silver. For only $40 each, I figured they were worth picking up and DIYing the color since my past searches almost resulted in me buying *identical* tables for $120 each. Since buying, I frankly haven’t made time to paint them. However, the gold is starting to grow on me. The accents in the silver mirror above my bed are actually an identical gold color. I think that’s why the gold isn’t bothering me as much as I thought. Stay tuned on Instagram because I’m sure as soon as I hit publish on this post, I’ll be DIYing these side tables. It literally never fails.
In efforts of making this feel like a normal bedroom, I knew I needed a few books, lamps and mini notebooks on the table. I keep my Powersheets here so I can check off my tending list daily. In full transparency, I never completed my March tending list and prep work. My plan was to finish the prep work the first weekend of March but it simply never happened. Since we are closing Q1 very soon, I am excited to do the spring goal refresh and complete my prep work and tending list for April. As my days and life look a little different now that COVID-19 has shaken up our worlds, I’m excited to get back into the swing of using my Powersheets for goal planning and tracking.
And even though my closet has ample space for shoes, I keep a few pair under each side table because 1. I love them & 2. I’m out of space for these pairs in my closet…..I can feel your judgement & honestly, you’re right – I need to get rid of some shoes. But let’s be honest, we both know I am not going to do that.
My actually bed frame is from Zinus and sits at 14 inches above the ground. As you can slightly see, I store my extra luggage, travel bookbags and box of wall decor under there. This apartment doesn’t have a coat closet, so I have to make space for those items wherever I can. Since my travel schedule has been light, and will be non-existent for the next few weeks (or months), under the bed is the best place to store all travel items. I go back and fourth with getting a bed skirt to hide everything under the bed but I hate bed skirts. I can’t tell you why and when this started, but there’s just something about bedskirts that make me thing of old or outdated.
And in case you’re wondering my lounge sweatshirt and pants both came from Belk. Each piece is 50% off right now making the set under $50. I can’t find my slippers online but I picked them up from TJ Maxx for under $10.
Well friends, 1246 951 words later and that’s all for today! I hope this post was a good distraction for you during this stressful and worry-filled time. If you’re working from home and looking for ways to spend extra time, spend one day editing your space. This could be with items you already have or with new purchases. If you’re starting with small changes and/or a small budget, change up your pillows (with new pillows or new cases), grab a throw blanket to decorate, wash your sheets and splurge on a clearance duvet cover. If you want to do a complete overhaul, take advantage of the various home sales right now. And since I know people will ask, this bedding area costs about $250 to put together, not including my books and shoes.
Thanks so much for reading! See you on Friday for a beauty post 🙂 -xo, Azanique <3

I love this! I tend to take my time when it comes to decorating my apartment. I think a lot of us just want our spaces to look “done” as soon as we move in that, like you said, we buy cheap and fast. I love what you’ve done to your place! It all looks thoughtful and uniquely you!
