This was…weird! Really great twists that I didn’t see coming but I’m still a bit confused by the birds. And honestly, everyone in this story is crazy as hell. Like, truly, mad!!! This is good book if you want something to linger in your brain for a while because of the shock factor and a few loose ends.

Another book that’s been sitting on my TBR via Scribd/Everand for literal years I figured why not give it a listen during my 2.5 week holiday break. This book was…fine. I don’t think it was particularly good or particularly bad but it would be a great and quick beach read.

Pretty Dead Things
A-Pretty Dead Things
I love any and everything told in alternating timelines, especially when one timeline could be considered historical fiction, so this was a hit for me. I started this book on my train ride from Charlotte to Raleigh last weekend then finished on the way back. The husband to be gave me the “ick”, as the kids would say, but the story was fun and the plot twist was unexpected. I don’t think this book is classified as a cozy mystery but I definitely think Pretty Dead Things fits the bill.

Ladies of the House
BLadies of the House
About 20% too long but a good story on politics, integrity and what should we do with both known and unknown “truths”? If you want to get into political dramas, this is a great first step as an easy intro read.
“What will the world become because of us?” <- the perfect ending quote!

The Neighbor Favor
B+The Neighbor Favor
I feel so lucky that we were able to have the author join us for book club this month. We all really looked several elements of the story and the start of the main characters love story. Truly, there was so much nostalgia to the later days of aim, chat rooms and meeting people on MySpace. I will say, the male narrator was a bit hard to listen to and made the book feel a little bit choppy and like the book was about 50 pages too long. My recommend would be to read via physical or kindle as I’ve heard awesome reviews from those who did.

The Swing of Things
BThe Swing of Things
True d r a m a alert! Starting off one way then taking a bit of a twisty end, I overall liked this book. I do think it was a bit too long but love the turn of events about 3/4 in. I didn’t love the ending too much (left me wanting more and believing some of the middle that dragged on could have been replaced with a better ending) but the “lifestyle” content was insightful. Fairly spicy, if you’re into that!

The Night We Lost Him
A+The Night We Lost Him
A+ mystery, IMO! The final secret revealed at the end was a true shock for me and I love the dual timeline and dual perspective. This author is really good at thrillers/mysteries and I couldn’t recommend enough. The audio is phenomenal so I would also recommend listening so you can hear the dual perspective in their own voices.

Everybody is a Liar
A-Everybody is a Liar
If you loved Gone Girl, you will absolutely eat up this quick thriller. I didn’t make the Gone Girl connection until the end and that made me love it more. It’s not the same story at all but some key elements that made everyone fall in love with this type of thriller. I felt good shock at several parts of the story and couldn’t stop thinking about the book for at least a day or two after reading. Quick, interesting and keeps your interest. This book is audio only, FYI!

After a small reading slump and a few not so great books, this was the perfect book to get me back on my game. A truly spicy romcom with likeable characters and a sweet love story. This book just made me want to curl up on the couch with a cup of tea and spend the entire day reading. This is my first time reading Jillian Meadows and I loved it!

Glory Be
BGlory Be
A really fun small town, older main characters, cozy mystery! This was my first book by this author and it was a fun weekend listen with a satisfying ending. This is the first in a series so I’m excited to dig into more as a few easy reads during the holiday break.

Unfortunately, this was my least favorite Emily Henry out of the ~5 I’ve read. I just didn’t love the characters or the story flow. If you want to read Emily Henry, Book Lovers and Happy Place are my absolute favorites.

My Sister, the Serial Killer
CMy Sister, the Serial Killer
This book had been on my TBR list for quite a few years. I will say we had a lively conversation about this book and our general confusion/frustration with the main character. What we didn’t get at the end was more of the “why” of her sister being a serial killer but a potential new victim entering the villa, literally. Readers do get insight into the geopolitical climate of Lagos and adjacent countries. This book is also pretty easy to read in quick burst since the sentences and chapters are quite short and there are several *gasp* moments to keep you engaged long enough to finish.

Trigger warning: on screen sexual assault
Another book I wanted to read since this author is truly dynamite. However, this was my least favorite book from this author. Complex storyline that became a bit hard to follow. A decent thriller but not one I would recommend.

Where Wild Peaches Grow
B-Where Wild Peaches Grow
Okay, I think I was on a dual timeline wrapped in family drama kick. This book gave me similar feels to Long After We Are Gone. I love this author for her cozy mysteries and we were lucky enough to have her on book club way back in October 2021. This story did such a great job showing how small town resentment and sibling rivalry can look well into adulthood. I wanted to love this book more than I did but overall would still recommend.

The Lost Letters from Martha’s Vineyard
A+The Lost Letters from Martha’s Vineyard
Another five star read for me and my absolute favorite book of this summer. Told in alternating timelines, I was hooked from the start. I generally love any and all historical fiction laced with family drama and this book was such a fresh breathe of air and gave me a lot of hope for love. There’s a bit of mystery lingering in the back ground and the author did a great job keeping the truth hidden under the surface until the very end. I cannot say more good things about this book and how the author told such a beautiful story.

It’s Elementary
A-It’s Elementary
The perfect summer cozy mystery. Elise Bryant was one of our favorite book club authors and this book was her first outside of YA. I love how light and fun and funny this book was even with the backdrop of a missing person. I was truly surprised by the “who dun it” reveal at the end and am excited to know there’s a second book coming in this series.

Long After We Are Gone
A+Long After We Are Gone
Truly a top five read of 2024 for me. Terah did such a wonderful job sharing complicated family dynamics and longstanding town secrets and deeply flawed characters. It was such a treat to have Terah join us for book club and hear about her process writing the book, how she dedicated on the characters. This book was up for. Book of the Year at Target and was in the top two selections. Alternatively, Terah was awarded their first ever Author of the Year honor. If I can only convince you to read a few books, this would absolutely be one!

Caved to bookstagram to read this Black vampire conflicted romance book and wasn’t disappointed! Spicy, fun and quick. This book is part of a series which would be fun to read, especially if you’re in a rut.

Only for The Week
A-Only for The Week
I finally caved and read this book and y’all, I get why everyone was addicted. Especially if you listen to the book, the main male character, Rome, has such a soothing voice. I also understand the second reason why everyone lied this book – the spice is highhhhhh. There were a few parts that felt kinda cringy but overall, loved this story. Loved the main character choosing herself and loved the showcasing of Black professionals having a diversity of careers, which is rarely shown in most books.

Well Behaved Wives
BWell Behaved Wives
This was an interesting one. The story of several women in Philly in the 1950s/60s where one tries to defy the norms. What I think the story did a good job sharing was a glimpse into the cycle of abuse.and how unfortunate the circumstances can be. It was heartwarming and I loved the fully circle ending showing the next two generations of women after them —fine manners be damned!
