hi, sweet friends! I’m so excited to be back on the blog just a week later with a much awaited updatet: the guest room. If you remember my house hunt back in Fall 2022, I was desperately looking for a dedicated guest room in the new house. I knew I’d be much closer to friends and family and different from Austin, I wanted to be able to host people vs. preferring friends to stay in hotels to be closer to the “fun” of E 6th. From the pictures alone, I knew this would be the perfect guest room given the space, light and being on a different floor. I was a tad bit bummed that the bathroom was in the bedroom and not in the easily accessible hallway but outside of that, I was so excited to be able to have a great space for my guests to spend the night or weekends with me.
After a ton of searching and a lovely partnership with Society Social, I landed on the most perfect coral grasscloth wallpaper from their 2023 release. I knew I wanted color without a pattern, and texture to hide the uneven plaster walls below and viola…I found the perfect match! Because I went against patterned wallpaper, I knew I wanted to have patterned chairs or pillows or benches to give the room some life. I was so lucky to have an ongoing relationship with The Inside where I was able to be gifted the jade cherry blossom bench to combine with my blue aviary by SCALAMANDRร throw pillows from my studio apartment.
Just for fun, I decided to go bold with color mixing by introducing a lilac channeled headboard that I purchased secondhand and really colorful art from local artists, retired artists and small artist collaborations. After having the wallpaper installed, I found this great set of lamps for $40 via FBMP and thrifted the most perfect Laura Ashley lampshades to finish them off. I pulled a few other pieces like the rug and bench pillow from other spaces in my home before working on the desk area and final touches.
Before I actually had furniture in this room I knew I wanted/needed a small desk area. I’m lucky enough to have a dedicated office space in my home but knew if friends or family were staying for the weekend or a few days at a time, a small writing desk would be nice to have. Like most of this room, I found both the desk and chair (now replaced with a blue suede wingback) secondhand via Facebook Marketplace. An art piece I found at the Four Hands Outlet in Austin was the perfect fit above the desk since I didn’t want a TV in this room. Then, I wrapped up this space with two pieces of original art from a retired South Carolina artist and fresh florals.
I have absolutely loved these powder blue curtains in my office and since they were a fairly close match to the throw pillows, I saved myself some time and stress by simply hitting reorder on those favorites and finished off the room with a gold arched mirror for myself and guests. And in true “me” fashion, I styled the only side table, which I picked up from a local Target overflow warehouse store, with both table books and reading books to hold a carafe of water and a drinking glass.
Well friends, I’m sure I’ve rambled enough about this space but I am so excited to have this room done. So far I’ve hosted a few friends and family members and each have loved the small touches of the water carafe, welcome basket, lots of extra blankets and my overstock of toiletries in the bathroom.I love nothing more than to host loved ones overnight in this room and can’t wait for all the future memories that this room will help facilitate.
